See, I trust my surgeon, and my medical team in the OR , including the anesthesiologist, was pretty solid. The only reason why I chose Mary Immaculate was because I needed to get a procedure done while I had insurance, STD, and Sick Leave, and sadly this was the only place I could go to. Sentara didn't have any openings. Figured you'd get the subtle homophobia for being a Catholic institution (although I've seen better tolerability elsewhere from other church based hospitals), but I think what surprised me the most was what little they bothered to actually take care of my pain. I had sinus surgery, and just like my prior surgery I had in NJ, I had a lot of pain. The pain was making me a bit nauseous, and I couldn't even open my eyes but it wasn't until I was about to leave that they decided to at least give me something. Back in NJ, I got hydromorphine without even asking for it. Now I know what it means for people to complain about pain and not being taken seriously, and a reminder of where I really was. Other than that, the pre-op nurses were alright. Definitely saw a lot more protocols here than back home, I think they were trying really hard to keep things consistent regardless of what surgery you had. They were very punctual. I mean, everything ran on a script and they kept to their schedule extremely well. I just wish they actually cared more about the fact that I was in pain, and just stop being afraid to call people by what they really are, but whatever I'm just glad I left sooner than I thought.
Majority of these reviews are regarding billing so I want to put others minds at ease with this facility. I had surgery this morning not knowing what to expect with it being my first time there. I had the most pleasant experience. I’d like to give personal thanks to all of my team members that took such great care of me; Bianca, Christine, Monica, Arthur, Nikki, Annette, Rachel, Dr G, and Dr Lindsey! You all were awesome!
IF I could only give this place negative stars I would. I had a botched surgery done in October 2020 by Dr. McConnell, at this same time we were in the process of moving. Tricare denied the surgical bill, I had not found out about this until mid 2021 when Amber's staff started calling and harassing me to all hours of the day, threatening and humiliating me due to an outstanding bill. Of course I was in tears trying to get this bill cleared up, the only course of action that Amber (office manager) could offer was for me to pay the bill. Unfortunately I did not have thousands of dollars just sitting around to hand over. I did extensive research into this bill and found out that Tricare had sent a form for me to fill out to make sure someone else wasn't responsible for the bill, the same bill that BCBS had already paid on receipt in 2020. This form was lost in the mail due to our address change, but I certainly did not need the verbal abuse and hostility of Amber and her staff over this issue. The form was filled out immediately in 2021. I had been waiting for the surgery to correct what Dr. McConnell had botched in October 2020, I stressed this to MASC every time I had to go through the Amber staffs verbal abuse. Since I was waiting on scheduling a corrective surgery Amber assured me she would call to set up the surgery when the bill was paid. When following up with Tricare on this bill I found out the bill was paid months earlier yet I had not received a call from the MASC for the corrective surgery. Amber was still verbally abusive, racist slurs and then informed me I was banned from the surgical center. BUT she would be happy to talk to my doctor to lie, verbally abuse and humiliate me further as to why I had been banned. This instantly set my hair on fire. Why would I approve for her to release PII and further defame me due to MASC own professionally down falls. Both my husband and I have had surgeries here by HROSM Doctors. Not once was there an incident with any staff there until this situation. All bills were paid in full and the staff had appreciated my humor, laughing and joking around while getting ready for surgeries. The phone gave the staff anonymity to harass, bully, call me racial slurs then turned the tables that MASC was the victim when I was forced to defend myself. There has been SO MANY HIPAA laws broken and Amber was just lining herself up for another one. At no time had I ever approved that my personal information be given out. After 15 years of going to MASC both my husband and I are forced to find another surgery center due to this one issue and the verbal abuse that has ensued. March 2023 I was refused corrective surgery again, Kim called to deny surgery and informed me that this was a me issue. Again verbal abuse on Kim's' behalf, being ill informed absolutely NO research on any past history prior to MASC recent billing issues.
By far the worst hospital experience we've ever had and that comes from a woman with a chronic autoimmune disease with a son that spent the first 3 months of his life in the hospital. Apparently they did not obtain a form needed to clear my son for his surgery. So we had to wait 3hrs for his regular doc to open and send it over. The recovery nurses were TERRIBLE. They kept trying to push us out, undoubtedly bc I'm sure they wanted to go home. The one nurse, Nancy, even went to get the doc when our son hadn't drank anything like he was supposed to yet so the doc could tell us we could go home anyway. The same woman also had her daughter and very young grandson in for lunch while she was supposed to be caring for patients. They never came to check on him except to ask AGAIN if he'd had anything to drink yet. I had to ask HER to come check his temp bc I thought he had a fever, he did! In stark contrast, the ladies at the front desk were prompt, thorough, and very nice!!
Very good experience. We arrived at 5:30 am. The process went very smoothly. The nurses were very attentive and caring. A lot of different people came in and checked on me prior to my procedure. I've had several surgeries before and was very happy with the service/care at Mary Immaculate. P.S. There is a Keurig inside the waiting area.
