Both my mother and husband had cataract surgery here--4 procedures in all over an 8 week period--giving me a extensive experience with this provider. To say I'm unimpressed would be an understatement. Firstly, some patients, like my mother, are made to arrive at 5 am! This is just abusive! I had to leave my house at 3 am to pick her up in time. Then, because they didn't tell her she couldn't have anything to eat or drink, she had coffee when she got up at 3:30 am! Then, we spent over an hour in the lobby only to be told she'd have to reschedule when she'd had nothing to eat or drink. We drove all the wat home, then they called and told us we could come back and they could do surgery later in the day as long as she didn't eat or drink anything. 🙄 We paid the surgery center fees on our Care Credit card for each surgery. But because Nova Med is only setup with Care Credit for 6 months, we're now left trying to pay off thousands of dollar--much of which is likely unnecessary fees--in only 6 months! Compare this with my vet who is set up to allow Care Credit charges interest free for up to 18 months! Seriously, Nova Med can't figure out how to offer longer interest-free financing? Just another way to ensure only the wealthy can afford these services. Speaking as the driver for 2 people who had cataract surgery at this facility, when taken back to pick up my family member post-op in the recovery area, I had to stand uncomfortably for up to 15 min because there are no chairs provided for the patient's family/driver. This is ridiculous! What must it be like for elderly people? And the nurses were utterly oblivious! Finally I spent many hours in the waiting room with each visit. Knowing this would be the case, I brought books to read and other things to keep me occupied. However, the OBNOXIOUS music blaring from the reception area was jarring and made reading or quiet concentration nearly impossible! The waiting room was filled with people trying to read books, or on their phones or computers. Today the woman next to me closed her book, looked at me and said, "no point trying to think with that racket--I give up!" During my first visit, a gentlemen on his computer had to use earplugs! The silence would have been most appreciated and far less jarring and disruptive. All in all, like most contacts with America's profits over people health care system, my experience with Nova Med made clear that me and my family are little more than profit centers, and our comfort and needs were of no concern!
Dr Kirby, who performed my first of two cataract and astigmatism surgeries on this past Tuesday, April 2, is wonderful. I believe in choosing him out of many other ophthalmologists, I am blessed to have chosen the very best. Also all of his surgery assistants doing all the preparation for my surgery and the anesthesiologist he employs did such a very thoughtful, caring and able job and made sure I was comfortable in mind and body. In fact all of the experiences I have had with Dr Kirby are most excellent.
If I could rate them higher than 5 stars I would. Everyone on the staff was very friendly, courteous and knowledgeable about all aspects of their jobs. Dr. Prenshaw who performed my eye surgery was great. All told, a great experience and outcome for my surgery.
I had surgery at atrium #2 and it was nothing like the reviews. Everyone was kind. Especially nurse Joanne. They explained what was going on so I knew and everything went very well. Very detailed with post op instructions. Young girl in the hall was not real bubbly or overly friendly but she got her job done. So no complaints.
I have had 2 cataract surgeries here. On the second surgery I opted out of both the oral sedative and the IV sedative. I only had the pain killer eye drops which are enough for the surgery. I got the bill today from the anesthesiologist and it was $800 before insurance. On my previous surgery it was $700 which included both the IV sedative and the oral sedative. I called to ask why the cost was so much and was told she charged $800 for being in the room while I had my surgery. $800 for 20 minutes of her time standing there and monitoring me???? That's what's wrong with our health care system and the rising cost of insurance! Looks like they can charge whatever they feel here.
