While I had a good experience with my doctor, the admin staff of the surgery center is awful. I was charged coinsurance the day I came in for surgery, and it was impossible to get an itemized receipt from them after. They told me they’d send the receipt and the best I could get was an email with the total - not even a single note indicating what it was for or that it was medical in nature. My flexible spending rejected it because the receipt lacked any information and I was told I had to pay the funds back to flexible spending because I couldn’t reach anyone at the center to get the receipt. Prior to the surgery, I probably had to call the nurses line 10x to do the pre authorization. The only way I ever had success reaching them was contacting my doctors medical assistant and asking them to reach out to me. Also, when I went to check in for surgery, I had three broken bones in my foot and was on crutches. You would’ve thought that they would’ve offered to bring the clipboard or to grab it from me for all of their forms since I was on crutches with a completely broken foot - but no. They just sat on their phones texting.

The worst when it comes to billing!!! I paid my remaining deductible which was close to 2k and their claim got denied, therefore deductible was never applied. I had to come out of pocket another almost 2K (since the amount was not applied)while trying to reach them to assist them in the claim and they are non responsive. You would think they would want to be paid for the surgery.....They owe me my out of pocket payment. I have been trying to reach someone for over 4 months now.

On January 14, 2025, my son underwent surgery at Bethesda Chevy Chase Surgery Center. At discharge, I was required to pay $3,979.50, which I paid in full. After the claim was processed, my insurer, Aetna, issued an Explanation of Benefits stating that my total patient responsibility was $888.94 and that I had overpaid by $3,090.56. In February 2025, Aetna informed me that part of the claim had been submitted as a miscellaneous charge and required resubmission by the provider. The provider later resubmitted the claim, and Aetna completed payment on April 30, 2025, bringing the total allowed amount to $3,979.50. Since that time, I have repeatedly contacted the surgery center to request a refund of the overpayment. I was told on multiple occasions that the refund was under review or pending, but no refund has been issued. I also attempted to resolve the matter in person at the surgery center without success.

They provided the incorrect time for my surgery arrival. I was told 6:30 am, I received a call at 6:15 as I was departing my house asking where I was. Turns out I was supposed to be there at 5:30. To make things worse, the front desk receptionist told me again I was late. How annoying! The receptionist admitted that other patients were told the wrong time too. I could tell bc there was an unseemly rush by the professional staff once I was prepped for surgery to get things underway. The aenestheiologist was being talked over by the nurses while she was reading me necessary health information. Not how you want your surgery to start. I asked for a call to discuss their mess-up but haven’t received one and it’s been two working days. I strongly recommend having your surgery elsewhere!

Please note I am reviewing the center, not the surgical team. I almost didn’t want to leave my mom here for her recent surgery because the lobby is a total dump. I was about to sit down and saw stains all over the couch. Gross. I then looked carefully for a chair that didn’t look dirty. The last thing you want when going for a surgery is to have to guess if the surfaces are clean. The receptionist was lovely; and was the only air of light and warm energy in the place. The area behind the lobby is also pretty dingy looking. If they can’t afford clean lobby furniture, one wonders what else they are skimping on. Next knee, we are going to insist on the hospital or a cleaner looking center. My mom had a successful knee replacement here, I don’t have anything but praise for her surgeon and his team. Parking is also rather difficult though I got lucky.
